FORT MYERS, Fla. — One year ago, Joe Mauer spent most of his time during spring training in the Hammond Stadium training room, frustrated while recovering from a lower back problem that caused the Minnesota Twins catcher to miss the first month of the season.
Now, at age 26, Mauer is the reigning American League MVP and a three-time batting champion who within weeks could become one of baseball’s highest-paid players. An eight-year, $200 million deal wouldn’t be unreasonable — and that’s if he decides to remain a Twin.
