I should have posted this sooner but the 2011 All-Star Game kind of sneaked up on me with Joe being on the disabled list and all.

MINNEAPOLIS — Joe Mauer fielded ground balls prior to Monday’s game against the Dodgers, but started at catcher and batted third, with Luke Hughes getting the start at first base.
Mauer, who hasn’t played first since one game there in 2003 with Class A Fort Myers, is trying to learn the position to help out with spot duty, as the Twins will be without Justin Morneau until at least mid-August. Morneau is scheduled to have neck surgery on Wednesday.
“I know I can do it,” said Mauer, who played 13 games at first in ’02 with Class A Quad Cities. “It’s just obviously this is the big league level. It’s just not an overnight thing. You can’t just say you have a good idea of how to play first and just go out there. But I’m going to do everything I can to try to get ready as quick as I can.”

MILWAUKEE — Twins reliever Jose Mijares saw catcher Joe Mauer call for another fastball in a full count to Prince Fielder.
The left-hander couldn’t believe he’d throw the pitch again, Mauer couldn’t believe Mijares would throw it down the middle. Meanwhile, Fielder couldn’t believe his luck.
The Brewers’ slugger doubled in the go-ahead runs with two outs in seventh inning off Mijares to raise his NL-leading RBI total to 65 and rally Milwaukee over the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Friday night.
“I don’t know what’s going on with Mauer. He didn’t put a sign down for a breaking ball. It was fastball, fastball, fastball,” Mijares said. “The last pitch I wanted to throw a breaking ball, but he called for a fastball.”
Mauer said it was easy to second guess his decision in hindsight.
“I thought it was his best chance. He threw a couple of good fastballs before that, but obviously he didn’t mean to throw it right down the middle,” Mauer said. “You throw that slider and he misses and bases are loaded. It means runners in scoring position, too. There’s a lot of things you can think about and it’s pretty easy to say that after the fact.”
